Arsenal ‘lack leaders’ required to win Premier League, says ex-Gunner Gallas

Ex-Arsenal captain William Gallas has claimed his former side lack the required leaders to win the Premier League title.

Gallas, 45, won back-to-back English top-flight titles at London rivals Chelsea before heading north to join Arsene Wenger's outfit, upon the expiry of his contract at Stamford Bridge. Bizarrely taking the number 10 shirt at his new club, the French international was named captain of the Gunners prior to the start of the 2007/08 season.

Appearing over 140 times for Arsenal during a four-year spell, Gallas then joined arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer – making him the first player to feature for London's 'big three'.

While Mikel Arteta's side sit top of the Premier League ahead of the north London derby this Saturday (October 1st), Gallas believes the Gunners need "more experienced" players to seriously challenge Manchester City and Liverpool.

"They [Arsenal] have improved a lot, they know each other very well and they play fantastic football," the ex-centre-back told Genting Casino. "Sometimes I think they need to have some more experienced players on the pitch and for them to speak up when they’re in a difficult moment."

"Those players have to talk to other players to help guide them. For example against Manchester United, I didn't like it when they conceded those goals, especially the last one, 75 minutes, you can't concede that.

"That's why when you have experienced players, straight away you can speak to them and explain, 'guys, you have to calm down, don't panic, we still have time to come back.'

"So against Tottenham, you never know what can happen, but you really need those players who can speak to the other players. Arsenal still lack leader who can talk to younger players."

"For me, it's always the same, it can be Arsenal or another team – Tottenham or Chelsea. You always need experienced players in your squad and in the starting 11."
