Arsenal icon Tony Adams still binges on burgers and shakes to fill retirement

Tony Adams has admitted to bingeing on burgers and milkshakes to fill the void on Saturdays.

The 56-year-old ex-Arsenal star says even 20 years since he retired, he misses the match day buzz. And he admits sometimes gorging on junk food to make himself feel better.

But after being sober since 1996, the recovering alcoholic recognises food can be an addiction too and he works to control his “emotional” eating.

He said: “I get a little bit sad on Saturdays. I used to get a fix on the Saturdays, you get into routines.

"I’d go and have a Byron burger and an Oreo milkshake, all of a sudden, as a reward.

“I’m not eating that stuff, then all of a sudden if I’m lonely or depressed then my food kind of goes up, I eat on my emotions.

“But if you’re aware of it, you can stop it, you can change.”

Tony, who runs the Sporting Chance Clinic for athletes struggling with addiction, does breathing exercises to control impulses.

He told the Monday Mile podcast: “Until you can start talking about this stuff you’re in denial.”

Back in September, Adams told the Daily Star of his decision to sign up to Strictly Come Dancing as he celebrated being 26 years sober.

Having revealed that his friends said not to do it, Adams said in response: "I said I’m at a stage of my life where I can do anything.

"I’m free of addiction, not taken drink or drugs for 26 years, and I can just go into it and have some fun."
