Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger’s Tottenham comment will make Gunners feel uneasy
There’s a long way to go – Ange Postecoglou staying grounded despite Spurs form
Arsene Wenger has seen enough from Tottenham to believe they will be genuine contenders for this season’s Premier League title after an ‘exceptional’ summer transfer window. The legendary former Arsenal boss was on punditry duties for beIN Sports over the weekend and did not hold back in his praise for Spurs, who sit at the top of the table after winning eight of their 10 matches.
Ange Postecoglou’s side dug deep to extend their winning run at Crystal Palace on Friday night, with the north Londoners clinging on to all three points despite a late surge from the hosts. Wenger was quizzed on their impressive start to the campaign by co-host Richard Keys and was quick to insist that he believes they will be among this season’s title contenders.
He said: “If I said after 10 games [they’d be] top of the league… You ask me, not a tricky question. I like to always say what I feel, really. Deeply, I believe Tottenham will be one of the contenders for the league. They bought James Maddison, who is a great player. He is that link from low midfield to high midfield and added some technical creativity to the team.
“They bought Micky van de Ven, who I find absolutely exceptional. They had weaknesses there and last season [Hugo] Lloris had not the best of seasons as well. And the movement from Son into the middle looks very good.”

Wenger went on to explain that he is expecting several other teams to challenge Tottenham for this season’s Premier League title, with Arsenal likely to be in the hunt alongside defending champions Manchester City as Pep Guardiola chases his fourth successive domestic crown.
“For the Premier League, I would say Arsenal for me, Liverpool, Tottenham,” he added. “City, of course, will always come back. They look like the four [contenders] at the moment for the Premier League.”

Tottenham have looked like a side reborn under Postecoglou’s guidance this season, with many of their new signings having made a huge impact since joining the club over the summer. Maddison and Van de Ven have been the two standout additions but Guglielmo Vicario has also stepped up to the plate in goal after replacing Hugo Lloris.
Their midfield partnership has also played a major role in shaping their impressive start, with Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr holding things down in the engine room on a weekly basis. However, it remains to be seen if Spurs will be able to sustain their impressive form over the next few months, with the likes of Arsenal and City keeping the pressure on as things stand.
