Arsenal’s hopes of signing Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka have been boosted. Reports claim there is a very good chance the centre-back will leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Ndicka has emerged as a target for Arsenal. The Frenchman is left-footed and therefore would provide competition for Gabriel Magalhaes at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta likes to have a balanced centre-back pairing, with one right-footed and the other strong on his left. Gabriel has nailed down that position for the time being and recently signed a new contract.

But Ndicka could be a potential long-term successor. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano did not name Arsenal when discussing Ndicka.

However, he claimed it is very likely he will not sign a new contract at Frankfurt. His current deal with the Bundesliga side expires in the summer.

Romano told Caught Offside: “There are many, but really many clubs interested in Ndicka. I’m told there’s a very good chance for Ndicka to leave on a free, so many clubs – not just in England – are exploring the situation.”

The Evening Standard reported Arsenal’s interest in Ndicka late last week. The report suggested Frankfurt may consider selling in January in order to prevent him from leaving for free.

Ndicka joined Frankfurt from Auxerre in 2018 and has made over 150 appearances for the club. He represented France from under-16 to under-21 level but is yet to earn a senior cap.

Meanwhile, Gabriel put pen to paper on a new long-term deal last Friday. The extension will keep him at Arsenal until 2027 amid interest from the likes of Juventus.

The 24-year-old is closing in on 100 appearances for the Gunners. And he described his emotions on signing his new deal to the club’s media team.

Gabriel said: “I’m very happy to sign this new contract with Arsenal, because it’s such a big club. It’s my dream and today is the best day of my life.

“I’m so happy to extend my contract here. Every game the supporters are pushing the team in the stadium. It’s why I’m so happy to stay here.

“Arsenal is my home. In the future, I want to win games for Arsenal, I want to win trophies with Arsenal and stay here for a long time because it’s my home.”
