Arsenal could trigger Sander Berge’s release clause this summer as they look to partner up Thomas Partey next season. Sheffield United have been relegated while the Norway international has been tipped to leave.
Arsenal star Partey has had a tough first campaign in the Premier League after a bright start fizzled out.
After signing from Atletico Madrid for £40m, there were high hopes that the midfielder would finally provide the bite needed at the Emirates.
But a combination of poor form and injuries have made it a season to forget for the Ghana international with the Gunners sitting 10th in the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta, who is under serious pressure himself, does not want to give up on Partey though just yet.
There are still signs that he can become the player he was at Atletico that had several Premier League clubs interested.
And Arsenal are looking at Sheffield United star Berge as the man to partner him up with in the middle of the park.
With Dani Ceballos set to return to Real Madrid at the end of the season when his loan expires, a midfielder is being sought after.
According to Yorkshire Live, Berge is one of several options while the Blades would be powerless in keeping him – if Arsenal trigger his £35m release clause.
Sheffield United are heading to the Championship after a poor season in the Premier League, compounded by a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
It means some players might have their sights set on leaving, with Berge definitely in that bracket.
The Norway international has had an injury-ravaged year but has more than enough class to attract attention from some of the top tier’s best.
Arsenal are one of those, with Everton also interested, but the Gunners could find Berge being the perfect partner with Partey.
The former Genk star had a £45m release clause drop to £35m after United’s relegation was confirmed.
As well as the 23-year-old, Arteta has made his international team-mate Martin Odegaard a top target.
The Real Madrid loanee has impressed the Arsenal coach since his arrival in January but they face a battle with Los Blancos in prising him away for good.
