Arsenal have been given a major boost as Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale U-turn has kept their hopes of signing him well and truly alive. The Gunners walked away from negotiations last week after the sides were too far apart on their valuations of the young goalkeeper.

The initial negotiations played out like a game of chicken, with Arsenal taking the initiative and walking away when the Blades’ asking price was deemed too high.

Naturally, Ramsdale is reportedly keen to join the Gunners in what would be the biggest move of his career by far.

According to The Athletic, Sheffield United have slashed their original asking price of £35million down to a much more palatable £24m.

The Blades’ return to the negotiating table, tails firmly between their legs, indicates that they are keen to cash in on the youngster before the summer window closes.

Slashing the price-tag by £11m is a sizable concession, which shows that they are keen to spend the money elsewhere as they attempt to gain promotion back to the Premier League.

Arsenal’s original stance was £20m, deemed to be fair for a ‘keeper who just suffered back-to-back relegations with Bournemouth and the Blades, and the new price is considerably closer to that fee.

All told, it looks as though a deal is likely to be completed before the end of the month.

The schedule of add-ons for the player is reportedly the only thing left to be decided, assuming Arsenal recognise the Blades’ compromise and agree to the fee.

The Gunners have been keen to bring in a stopper who can put pressure on Bernd Leno between the sticks.

As the only ‘keeper Arsenal have concretely pursued over the past few weeks, all their eggs were in Ramsdale’s basket, who they felt was the perfect candidate for the job.

Still in his early-twenties, the Englishman could not kick up too much of a fuss if left on the bench to begin with, while he has shown enough promise to hint at a future No 1 spot at the Emirates.

The 23-year-old’s talent was recognised by Gareth Southgate who drafted him into the England set-up for Euro 2020.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is under pressure to sure things up at the back after his side’s 2-0 humbling against newly-promoted Brentford on Friday.

Instilling confidence in Ben White should be one course of action after his tough duel with Ivan Toney, while bringing in a ‘keeper like Ramsdale shouldn’t do them any harm either.
