Ben White has been at Arsenal’s Colney training ground, finalising a move to the Gunners. The Brighton defender has been a target for the north London club all summer as Mikel Arteta looks to improve on a disappointing 2019-20 campaign. He will be their third signing of the summer, after the Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokongo were brought in.

According to Goal, the defender is close to finalising his move to the Gunners.

The England international is extremely versatile and can play in defence or midfield.

He is likely to be used as a centre-back for his new club, with Arsenal losing David Luiz on a free transfer this summer.

They have also let young defender William Saliba join Marseille on loan.

White featured heavily for Brighton last season, as the Seagulls avoided relegation, playing 36 Premier League games for Graham Potter’s side.

His distribution and ability to carry the ball out from defence was something that drew plaudits from fans and pundits alike last season.

The 23-year-old’s impressive form on the south coast earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020.

He didn’t feature at Euro 2020 but impressed on his England debut in a friendly against Austria before the tournament.

Leeds tried to sign White last year after he had an impressive loan spell at the club during the 2019-20 campaign.

The defender starred as Marcelo Bielsa’s side won promotion to the Premier League.

Brighton turned down multiple offers from the Yorkshire side, including a bid of £25million, according to reports.

Arsenal are set to pay double that to secure his services, after White signed a new deal with Brighton after interest from Leeds last summer.

Former Premier League defender Danny Mills recently suggested that White is too good for Arsenal, and urged the defender to join a club that has a better chance of winning trophies.

“I don’t see him winning anything at Arsenal,” Mills told talkSPORT earlier this month.

“I think he would have options of going to bigger clubs with a better chance of winning trophies, playing Champions League football, which would do his international career a world of good.

“I think he is better than Arsenal, he can do better than them.”
