Arsenal fans delighted ref farce sorted as VAR denies Leeds injury time penalty

Arsenal fans breathed a huge sigh of relief as they survived not one but two penalty let-offs to defeat Leeds on a chaotic afternoon at Elland Road.

The Gunners remain top of the Premier League thanks to Bukayo Saka's first-half goal, which was enough to secure a narrow 1-0 win against the Whites. It was a match full of drama, kickstarted by Chris Kavanagh's decision to suspend the game after just 23 seconds because of a power cut inside the stadium.

A loss of power meant Kavanagh lost communication with VAR officials back at Stockley Park, while the ground's goalline technology also went down.

The teams reemerged onto the pitch after a 40 minute wait, with Arsenal taking the lead midway through the half when Bukayo Saka exchanged passes with Martin Odegaard before scoring from a tight angle.

Leeds thought they had found a way back into the game after the break when substitute Patrick Bamford volleyed home. But referee Kavanagh adjudged him to have pushed Gunners centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes.

Bamford was given another chance to draw his side level shortly after when William Saliba handled the ball in the box. The penalty award stood, despite an offside in the build-up, but Bamford could only pull his effort wide of the goal.

The 29-year-old had the best of the home side's chances and received another golden opportunity to level in stoppage time when Kavanagh sent off Gabriel for kicking out at Bamford, giving Leeds another penalty.

But there was yet more drama as Kavanagh overturned both decisions after consulting his pitchside monitor. Leeds had more than their fair share of chances, but Arsenal held on to secure a vital three points and their ninth Premier League win of the season.

Afterwards, Arsenal fans on social media thanked lady luck – and VAR – after a difficult afternoon at Elland Road. One wrote: "VAR still saved the day….Arsenal were not their usual selves today."

Someone else said: "VAR actually saved us for once, I’m shook at that." While a third person added: "This is the most difficult 3 points we've won this season!! Thanks for the delay at the begin to set the comms up cause we were saved by VAR!"
