A statement on the club’s official website read: ‘Gabriel Jesus has successfully undergone surgery to his right knee after suffering an injury during the Brazil v Cameroon World Cup group stage match on Friday.

‘Gabby will now begin his rehabilitation programme.

‘Everyone at the club is supporting Gabby and will be working hard to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.’

Arsenal have refused to put any timescale on the 25-year-old’s recovery, but initial reports from Brazil claimed Mikel Arteta’s star striker would be missing for up to three months.

Jesus was forced off during Brazil’s 1-0 group stage defeat against Cameroon after which head coach Tite was forced to deny accusations that the former Manchester City had been nursing a pre-existing injury.

When asked if he knew Jesus was in pain before the match against Cameroon, Tite replied: ‘That’s a very good question because I don’t like hearing lies out there, evil lies.

‘Those other people want to do bad things for others.

‘At no time, whatsoever, do we play for a victory at the risk or peril of a player.

‘So the liar who’s out there, because that’s the name isn’t it? The haters, right? They keep giving hate, it gives them an opportunity, go and do something else and stop giving fake news.

‘Arsenal have a great medical department, we have a great medical department, we are responsible, we are personally responsible, we are ethical, it would never have happened.

‘I didn’t want this to happen, it’s a shame, we are very sorry for Gabriel.’

Jesus has played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s unlikely title challenge despite scoring just five Premier League goals since his £45million move from City.

Whether Arteta opts to strengthen his forward line in January, with only Eddie Nketiah in reserve, remains to be seen.

Arsenal hadn’t been looking at signing a striker next month with a wide forward and a central midfielder the two areas they had been looking reinforce.
