Arsenal chief Edu opens up on talks with Arsene Wenger about possible return
Arsenal technical director Edu says he has spoken with Arsene Wenger and would like to see the iconic Frenchman back at the club in some capacity.
Wenger brought an end to his glittering 22-year reign at Arsenal back in 2018, leaving as the most successful and longest serving manager in the side’s history.
The 72-year-old has since been carrying out his duties as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, but there has been mounting talk he could be on his way back to the Emirates for a possible consultancy role.
The release of the documentary ‘Invincible’ and Wenger’s presence at this month’s star-studded premiere in north London has only intensified speculation of a potential reunion.
Both Mikel Arteta and Edu got the chance to catch up with their ex-manager at the glitzy red carpet event and the latter lifted the lid on their conversation in his programme notes ahead of the Gunners’ trip to Manchester United.
‘It was great to see Arsene Wenger the other day at the screening for his new documentary,’ the Brazilian explained.
‘We had a good conversation, and I said to him that he cannot realise how important he is for my career.
‘I told him I would like to see him a bit closer to the club and to myself as well in the future. That would be a real, real pleasure and special for everyone here.
‘I also told him I was so proud to see myself in his film – it brought back lots of great memories about that Invincibles team!’
Arteta has made no secret of his desire to have Wenger on board, recently claiming it would be a ‘great help’ for the club.
‘He’s been in communication. I saw him and I talked to him when we went to see the film,’ the Arsenal head coach told reporters.
‘It was incredibly pleasant to see him and chat to him.
‘Hopefully we can bring him close because I think he would have a great time just seeing the environment he can create around him when he’s around this place because of the respect, admiration and love that everybody at the club has for what he’s done and as well what he represents as a person in this club.’
Asked what role Wenger could take up, the Spaniard replied: ‘I cannot tell you now.
‘But what I can say is I would like him to be much closer to me personally because I think it would be a great help, a great help for the club.
‘Things take time and he has to dictate those timings and what I can say from my side on my behalf of everybody that we would be delighted to have him much closer.’
