Arsenal technical director Edu says Kieran Tierney is part of the club’s “long-term vision” after the Scottish international signed a new contract with the club. Tierney has committed himself to the club’s rebuild by penning a new five-year deal with the Gunners.

The 24-year-old left-back only arrived at the Emirates from Celtic in 2019 in a transfer worth around £25million, but has already established himself as a key player for the club.

Tierney made 36 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side last season, although his impact has been limited by a number of niggling injuries.

Arteta and Edu are plotting a major overhaul of the playing squad this summer following a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

While many first-team players are expected to leave Arsenal in the off-season, Tierney’s untouchable status has been confirmed by the news on Friday.

“We are so pleased to have agreed a new long-term deal with Kieran,” Edu said.

“Anyone who has seen him play will recognise very quickly that he is a player of huge ability, but I can tell you that he is also a player with a fantastic attitude and mentality.

“Kieran’s new contract is not just about the present and next season, it’s with a long-term vision and Kieran being an integral part of the future of the club.”

Tierney has made 62 appearances for Arsenal so far and will rejoin the squad soon ahead of the 2021/22 season following Scotland’s group stage exit at Euro 2020.

“KT gives us so much extra strength both defensively and offensively and it’s great to know that he’ll be with us for the long term,” Arteta said.

“Since his move from Celtic, his work ethic and quality has ensured that he is already one of most exciting players in the Premier League and a hugely important part of our team, both on and off the pitch.”

Arsenal are expected to be busy in the transfer window this summer and are already close to landing the £50m signing of Ben White from Brighton.

Anderlecht midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga is also expected to arrive in north London this summer, while an attacking midfielder and depth in the full-back positions are also priorities for the club.

Granit Xhaka is reportedly close to joining Jose Mourinho at Roma and Matteo Guendouzi is being linked with a move to Marseille.

Meanwhile, there are doubts over the likes of Hector Bellerin, Lucas Torreira, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock and Alexandre Lacazette.
