Arsenal can give Kai Havertz dream shirt number as Chelsea transfer ‘close’

Kieran Tierney could be on the move from Arsenal

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Chelsea star Kai Havertz and can welcome the German with his favourite shirt number. The Gunners are supposedly in ‘advanced’ discussions with their Premier League rivals over a £65million transfer.

Havertz could become Arsenal’s first summer signing once the two clubs have concluded their discussions. As reported by Express Sport on Tuesday, the attacker is part of a Fantastic Four targeted by Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal can even hand Havertz a nice surprise by handing him the No 29 shirt he has worn throughout his career. The 24-year-old made his senior debut for Bayer Leverkusen aged just 17 in October 2016 and donned the same digits that he has gone on to wear over the last seven years.

Becoming one of Europe’s most highly-rated talents while at Leverkusen, Havertz attracted the interest of Chelsea. The Blues parted with a whopping £75m to prise the youngster from Germany in 2020 and handed him his favourite squad number.

Havertz split opinion at Stamford Bridge but wrote his name in club folklore by scoring the Champions League-winning goal against Manchester City at the end of his first season. Often shoehorned into an unnatural centre-forward role, Havertz ultimately failed to live up to his potential with the Blues.

However, he has the opportunity to kickstart his career under Arteta. Arsenal can make the Germany international feel at home right away by giving him the No 29.

The digit has not been worn by an Arsenal player since Matteo Guendouzi was axed by the Gunners boss in the summer of 2021. The Frenchman initially departed for Marseille on loan before the deal was made permanent.

No 29 was previously worn by Granit Xhaka during his first two years at Arsenal. However, the Swiss changed to his preferred No 34 ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

Other players to wear Havertz’s possible number include Kim Kallstrom and Marouane Chamakh. Ashley Cole briefly wore it, too, before wearing No 3 for the majority of his Arsenal career.

As reported by Express Sport, Havertz is one of four major signings targeted by Arteta. It is a major transfer assault that could cost the Emirates Stadium outfit a combined £250m, handing Arteta a massive boost ahead of another Premier League title bid.

A second bid for Declan Rice worth £95m was rejected by West Ham on Tuesday. The Gunners are also interested in signing Ajax defender Jurrien Timber and Southampton teen sensation Romeo Lavia.
