Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has had Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s struggles highlighted with a brutal Cristiano Ronaldo comparison. Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent believes Manchester United striker Ronaldo shows more “hunger and desire” to score goals than Aubameyang despite approaching 37.
Ronaldo scored the 800th and 801st goals of his senior career during United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal on Thursday.
An enthralling game saw Arsenal lead before United twice went ahead. Ronaldo scored two in the second half, including the winning goal from the penalty spot.
The Portugal international was substituted before he could complete his hat-trick, with rumours surfacing that he injured his knee while celebrating his second goal. Ronaldo is now reportedly a doubt for United’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Aubameyang has struggled in front of goal in the last 18 months.
The 32-year-old has scored just 12 times in the top-flight since penning a new three-year contract in September 2020. That includes only four this season.
Arteta underlined Aubameyang’s fall from grace by substituting his captain when they needed a goal at Old Trafford.
And the Spaniard has been told by ex-England forward Bent that his striker is being shown up by Ronaldo.
“When you look at Aubameyang and you look at Ronaldo, one of the biggest differences to me is the hunger and the desire,” Bent told TalkSPORT.

“I look at Ronaldo and he is absolutely starving hungry to score goals.
“One’s [36]. How old is Aubameyang, 33? I understand that.
“He’s not the greatest because of his hunger, it’s because of his ability. You can be hungry to score goals.
“But I look at Aubameyang sometimes and he’s not in the box, there’s times when he’s getting beaten by the defenders.
“Listen, his biggest attribute is his pace. So there are times when Arsenal are struggling in games, what do you have to do?

“You have to clip it over the top, just roll it down the channel and let him use his pace and get Arsenal up the pitch. It’s like he doesn’t even do that sometimes.
“As the ball went wide, he’s not in the box. At times, there have been occasions where he has carried Arsenal on his back – pre-[signing a] contract.
“The cup final, the start of the following season, he carried Arsenal on his back and he was fantastic.
“That player is not the same player that you see today.”
