Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta fumes Brentford game should have been postponed
Mikel Arteta claims Arsenal’s game against Brentford should have been postponed – and insists he’s surprised it wasn’t.
Four Gunners players tested positive for Covid before last Friday’s 2-0 defeat to the Bees, but club appeals for a postponement fell on deaf ears.
One of the four, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is now in contention to face Chelsea after a negative test, but Alexandre Lacazette is still recovering.
Arteta said: “Am I surprised it wasn’t postponed? Yes, I was surprised, but the regulators decided that the best thing to do was to play the game. What we did is what we had to do through the club.
"And the club doctor explained the situation, how it developed and the risks that we considered.
“For me it was simple, my best players have Covid, they cannot play, and I have to put a team out there that’s unprecedented in this league and take all the pressure.
“They had some tough days. Laca still hasn't trained so he's not been very good. Auba had a training session yesterday.

“But yeah, they were affected by the virus, and Alex Runarsson similar as well. So yes, they were ill.”
Aubameyang is now following Premier League protocols and will return to full training in time for his fitness to be assessed ahead of Sunday’s game.
But Lacazette has already been ruled out of contention while he continues to recover from the virus.
