Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has reacted to his side’s 6-0 hammering of West Brom in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. The Gunners went into the game under pressure after recent defeats to Brentford and Chelsea. But they eased some of the concerns hanging over the Gunners with an emphatic victory at the Hawthorns.

After losing to Brentford and Chelsea, Arteta couldn’t afford for Arsenal to lose this one.

But it took 17 minutes for the pressure on the Spaniard to ease, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang putting the visitors in front.

The Gabon international would go on to notch a treble for the Gunners, opening his account for the campaign in the process.

Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette were also on target as Arsenal cruised to victory.

And Arteta will be hopeful this result can act as a catalyst for a change in fortunes, especially with the club in such a mire.

Speaking after the game, the Spaniard addressed the result – and admitted he could play Aubameyang down the middle more often, as opposed to on the wing.

“He did start, he’s come from COVID, he looked sharp, this is the first time he’s played some minutes since the other night,” he said.

“So he needs some rhythm. Physically he’s not at his best yet but he looked good tonight.”

“He’s played outside, he can play inside. It depends on the plan of the game, the players we have available, it will depend.”

Aubameyang, with his treble, was the hero of the hour for Arsenal.

And the Gabon forward also spoke out after the contest.

Hat-trick hero Aubameyang also spoke out, admitting he wants the result to give the Gunners confidence going forward.

“Great feeling. I’m happy we won this game,” said the former Borussia Dortmund hitman.

“It’s good to build confidence of the team.

“The commitment of every player is always there 100%. We try our best to give the fans what they want.

“This hopefully can give us something to build our confidence for the next games. We had to work hard and keep pushing.

“Everyone knows I like the space [in behind a defence]. My team-mates played very well. It was a good game today.

“We still have 36 games left so we will give our best for a good season.”

BBC pundit Clinton Morrison felt Arsenal produced a ‘professional’ performance on the night.

“These West Brom youngsters can’t be ashamed of themselves,” said the retired striker.

“Arsenal can cause many Premier League teams problems.

“It was a professional performance. Aaron Ramsdale had to make a few saves but Arsenal were comfortable and are into the next round.”
