Mikel Arteta is under increasing pressure following Arsenal’s egregious start to the new Premier League campaign. The Gunners were humbled on the opening day of the campaign at Brentford before succumbing to a home defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

Arsenal have looked devoid of ideas during the early-season defeats and have been lacklustre in front of goal.

The side suffered with creativity issues last term and their measly 55 league goals was their worst tally since before Arsene Wenger joined the club.

The Gunners travel to Manchester City on Saturday in the early kick off and defeat at the Etihad Stadium could even leave the side at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Speculation has continued to mount around Arteta’s future and the Spaniard could be clinging on to his job if he doesn’t get a result against the Premier League champions.

A string of managers have been linked to the Arsenal job should it become available and club chiefs may look to target the likes of Brendan Rogers, Antonio Conte or Eddie Howe.

But one man who thinks the north London club may turn their attentions to one of two wildcard options is former England striker Darren Bent.

“I heard Sol Campbell talking about it,” Bent told talkSPORT breakfast on Tuesday.

“Sol would be good but even if it’s not Sol, one of those legends like Tony Adams.

“I think you need these kind of leaders who have been in Arsenal’s DNA for so long.

“Tony Adams was fantastic and it was always ‘you’ll never beat the Arsenal’ and ‘one nil to the Arsenal’ because they kept so many clean sheets.

“I definitely think they need one of these legends to come in – like a specialist coach to help Arsenal’s defence because they need it.

“We know Antonio Conte is out there. If Arsenal had any kind of hopes of attracting him or getting him to the club then you would say get rid of Arteta now and get Conte in.

“I don’t think that’s possible but, unfortunately, if you get rid of him now, where do you turn?

“There was an image of Arteta slumped in his chair just with his head down and to me he looked like a broken man.

“He can come out and give us all the chat about moving in the right direction and ‘thanks to the fans for supporting us’ and all this but the fans have turned on him.”
