Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed the signing of RB Salzburg midfielder Enock Mwepu on a four-year deal. The Zambian star’s arrival could pave the way for Arsenal or Liverpool to pursue their interest in current Seagulls’ midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Arsenal and Liverpool have been the two Premier League clubs most heavily linked with Bissouma this summer.

The 24-year-old caught the eye last season and cemented himself as one of the Premier League’s top tacklers and interceptors.

His future was expected to be sorted early in the window, with Brighton seemingly resigned to losing him, but no movement has yet been made.

Now they’ve seemingly acquired his replacement, Bissouma’s departure may edge closer in the coming days.

After Brighton announced the signing, Graham Potter explained that Mwepu will ‘add competition’ in his squad.

He said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome Enock to the club and are looking forward to working with him.

“He has a great deal of experience for somebody of his age, including Champions League and international football.

“He’s primarily a central midfielder, although he is capable of playing in numerous positions, is open-minded, adaptable and very keen to learn and develop.

“He will add competition to our existing options in that area of the squad going into the new season.”

After Potter’s comments, Brighton fans will hope Bissouma stays for one more year to form an exciting partnership with Mwepu.

However, if Arsenal, Liverpool or any other suitors lodge a reasonable offer, the Mali international will likely leave the Amex Stadium.

Mikel Arteta is searching for a new partner for Thomas Partey, with Matteo Guendouzi leaving for Marseille and Granit Xhaka seemingly also on the way out.

However, the Gunners are reportedly closing in on Anderlecht midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga, which could be a cheaper alternative.

Jurgen Klopp is also reportedly on the lookout for a Giorginio Wijnaldum replacement ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

The Dutchman left Anfield on a free transfer this summer, joining French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Whilst Bissouma doesn’t particularly fit the mould of midfielder the Reds need, he would be a welcome addition among the fanbase.

With international tournaments soon coming to an end and Premier League clubs commencing their pre-season preparation this week, Bissouma’s future will likely be confirmed soon.

He could very well stay and play a big role in Potter’s exciting Brighton team, but his suitors will take hope from the Seagulls’ latest addition.
