Arsenal ‘agree Jurrien Timber transfer’ as Edu pulls off £14m discount

Arsenal have agreed a fee with Ajax to sign Jurrien Timber, according to reports. Gunners sporting director Edu has seemingly managed to get a huge discount on the player from his initial valuation.

Timber emerged as the top defender target for Arsenal earlier this month. They had an opening bid worth £30m rejected for the 22-year-old.

The Athletic claimed at the time that Ajax wanted a fee in the region of £50m. But it appears a deal has been struck at way less than that amount.

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf claims a verbal agreement between Arsenal and Ajax has been reached at an initial £36m, a full £14m less than the asking price. Bonuses will take the overall deal to just a tad over £40m, still £10m less than what Ajax initially wanted.

The report says Timber will undergo a medical in the next few days before being presented as an Arsenal player. He will leave Ajax having played 121 times in all competitions.

Arsenal are attempting to get the bulk of their transfer business done before their pre-season tour to the USA. They confirmed the £65m purchase of Kai Havertz from Chelsea on Wednesday.

A fee has also been agreed with West Ham for top target Declan Rice. The Gunners will pay a club-record £100m for Rice, with a further £5m in add-ons.

The signing of Havertz, Rice and Timber will take Arsenal’s spending to over £200m with two months of the window still remaining. Mikel Arteta is aiming to build on the promising performance in the Premier League last season, where his side topped the table for much of the campaign before slipping up in April.

Arsenal fell short defensively in the final stages of the season. The absence of William Saliba through a back injury suffered in March proved costly.

Arsenal’s new kit for 2023/2024 is a stylish twist on a classic as it reinvents that mid-1990s vibe. A truly modern-looking shirt with a homage to the past, the Nike kit also includes a nod to the club’s iconic Invincible’s side in the finer details while catching the eye with the lightning bolt motif

Rob Holding was unable to fill the void left by the Frenchman. Arteta has wanted to sign a right-sided centre-back this summer to provide competition and support to Saliba.

Timber is his chosen target and a deal is now seemingly at the final stages. The Dutchman spent the majority of last season as a centre-back for Ajax.

However, he has also played at right-back for both club and country. He will provide another option to Arteta in that position, on top of Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Arsenal had been linked with a move for an out-and-out right-back. Sacha Boey, Ivan Fresneda and Joao Cancelo have all been rumoured to be targets.

However, Timber kills two birds with one stone as he is able to play in two vital positions.
