Tottenham have been dealt a huge curveball in their season as Cristiano Romero and Giovani Lo Celso will remain with Argentina following yesterday’s dramatic postponement of Brazil vs Argentina.
The Spurs duo, along with Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Emi Buendia, were bizarrely detained by ANVISA personnel following their failure to quarantine in Brazil after travelling from England.
Having landed in Brazil three days prior to the game, the Brazilian health authorities selectively chose to detain the quartet just seven minutes into the World Cup qualifier in Sao Paulo, causing the game to be abandoned.
Any non-Brazilian who has been in the United Kingdom prior to two weeks before arrival must undergo a two-week quarantine period.
But despite the four players travelling over and believing they qualified under elite sportsmen, Brazilian rules suggest that was not to be the case.

The Argentinian FA believed that this wouldn’t happen when they were in touch with the Premier League – however there had been a misunderstanding.
The officials and staff were on the pitch for the best part of an hour before the game was suspended.
And reports claimed that some of the squad locked themselves in the dressing room to avoid the ANVISA authorities.
Yet, despite the players being detained and deported, Romero and Lo Celso will not be back on London soil just yet.

According to The Athletic, the pair look set to remain with Argentina to face Bolivia in their next World Cup qualifier on Friday.
Although according to Sky, they are currently trying to organise their own flights to Croatia in the hop they can join Villa duo Martinez and Buendia to quarantine – with fines and disciplines to be issued upon their returns.
It marks a huge blow for Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo, who replaced departing defender Toby Alderweireld with Romero in a bid to increase the average age of the squad.
Romero joined from Atalanta over the summer on a loan-to-buy deal, with the option to make the move permanent for a £42.5million fee.

And having made his Spurs debut in the home tie against Watford, it appears he may have to wait until later in the season to make his second debut.
Spurs have started the season better than anybody in the Premier League, as the only side to maintain a 100 per cent record after three games.
Three consecutive 1-0 wins have dragged Nuno’s men to the top, but the Portuguese boss will not care about the manner of his victories.
