Argentina fans celebrated wildly in the stands ahead of their World Cup quarter-final against the Netherlands after learning of Brazil’s defeat to Croatia in a penalty shoot-out. The Losail Stadium was just starting to fill with Argentina fans ahead of their match later this evening and many were watching Brazil’s clash on their phones.
There were celebrations when Croatia scored their equaliser in stoppage time, but the stands were then jumping when Marquinhos’ spot kick hit the post to send Brazil home. Hundreds of Argentinians were spotted cheering and bouncing while members of the Argentine press were also spotted jumping out of their seats at the final result.
Brazil were strong favourites to win the World Cup and looked in good form following their 4-1 demolition of South Korea in the last-16. The match with Croatia was always going to be a tougher test, but Brazil would have still fancied their chances to progress.
But they were far from their best in front of goal with the likes of Neymar, Richarlison and Vinicius Jr struggling in the final third. Croatia were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure with Alisson largely untested.
Neither side was able to find a breakthrough inside 90 minutes with the game going to extra time. And Neymar looked to have won it for Brazil with a brilliant solo goal, only for Croatia to score a dramatic equaliser in the final minutes of extra time.
It went down to a penalty shoot-out and Brazil got off to the worst possible start as Rodrygo saw his effort saved and Croatia’s players found the net on every occasion. Marquinhos was fourth for Brazil to keep them in the tie, but he fired his effort onto the post with Croatia’s players running off to celebrate with goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
Brazil’s players slumped to the floor with the likes of Neymar and Antony all being consoled by team-mates. It means Brazil and Argentina will have to wait another four years before they potentially meet at another World Cup.
They’ve only met on four occasions at a World Cup with the last being back in 1990. Argentina face off against the Netherlands this evening in their bid to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup.
Lionel Messi’s country survived a scare against Australia in the last round with Emiliano Martinez coming to their rescue in the final minutes. Meanwhile, the Netherlands outclassed the USA in their last-16 tie, winning 3-1.
