Argentina’s World Cup celebrations ended in chaos on Tuesday as a man died after falling through a roof, while a young boy was left fighting for his life in a coma. The South American team lifted their first World Cup trophy since 1986 on Sunday after getting the better of France in the final. But there were hectic scenes in Buenos Aires during the team’s victory parade, with violence ensuing and one woman even walking around the city naked.
Argentina tasted their third World Cup triumph after holding their nerve in a penalty shootout against their European counterparts at Lusail Stadium. The South Americans had raced into a 2-0 lead in the first half, before being pegged back late on when Kylian Mbappe lashed in a quickfire double.
The match headed to extra time as Messi and Mbappe found the back of the net once again. But it was Lionel Scaloni’s team who came out on top.
Millions of people lined the streets for Tuesday’s bus parade as Messi and his Argentina team-mates were lauded as heroes. But according to the Daily Mail a 24-year-old fan lost his life as he fell through a roof while jumping up and down.
Meanwhile, La Nacion have reported that a five-year-old boy is in a coma after sustaining a serious head injury due to an incident in Plaza San Martin, where he was celebrating with his parents. A piece of marble struck the child after falling from a monument and he is now in intensive care.
Meanwhile, videos showed fans clashing with police in the Argentinian capital as stones and bottles were launched. Officers wearing riot gear attempted to take control of the situation, with some fans being arrested. And another video showed a naked brunette woman walking around the city next to the Obelisk monument.
The bus parade was ultimately cut short because of safety concerns as some fans threw projectiles and attempted to jump onto the bus with the players. The Argentina stars were eventually evacuated onto helicopters to avoid the chaos as the celebrations continued from the air, with supporters chanting and applauding as the aircrafts swooped lower.
The players were finally taken back to the Argentine Football Association’s training base near Ezeiza Airport where the parade had started. And AFA president Chiqui Tapia then announced that the parade had been abandoned.
“They won’t allow us to greet everyone who was at the Obelisk,” he wrote on Twitter. “The security organisations that were escorting us won’t let us continue. I apologise in the name of all the players. A real shame.”
