Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has made himself look silly after suggesting a top four finish would be like a title win for the club before going on to lambast his players’ attitudes, claiming it was the reason why the club have not won a trophy. The Italian looks set to be relieved of his duties as Spurs manager in the coming days with Daniel Levy taking action after his post-Southampton outburst.
Conte’s spell as Tottenham manager has quickly turned sour with supporters becoming increasingly unhappy with his style of play as results dry up. The club have no chance of winning any silverware again this season and while they currently sit in the top four, Newcastle can move ahead if they win their games in hand meaning they face an uphill battle for Champions League football next season.
Conte put the blame for the club’s current predicament squarely at his players’ feet berating them for their lack of passion after his side bottled a 3-1 lead to draw with relegation strugglers Southampton.
However, he may have made himself look silly with his remarks after saying the exact opposite about his men earlier in the week in comments that have now resurfaced with his job on the line.

“There are 11 games to go and we needed today to bounce back to show that we are strong mentally and in this type of situation the morale can be really down but instead I see the right spirit, the right fight and the right desire to get the three points,” Conte said ahead of the match at the St Mary’s. “For sure I repeat for us to finish in the top four is like winning the Premier League”.
However, he had notably changed his tune come full-time on Saturday after dropping two points. He ranted at his players for a lack of passion and blamed them for the long malaise at the club that has stopped them from winning trophies.
“I said that I wanted to see the fire, not that I have seen,” he began. “It is different. I said that I want to see the fire in their eyes, in their hearts. I want to see the right spirit. Ok. Not only in the training session, on the pitch. Because here you have to make the difference. And I am not saying this.

“Until now I try to hide the situation but now, there are 10 games to go and some people think we can fight. Fight for what with his spirit, this attitude, this commitment? What? For seventh, eighth, 10th place? I am not used to this position. I’m really upset and everyone has to take their responsibility.
“Not only the club, the manager and the staff. The players have to be involved in this situation because it is time to change this situation if Tottenham want to change. If they want to continue in this way, they can change the manager, a lot of managers, but the situation cannot change. Believe me”.
While Conte’s stint at Tottenham looks to be over the club’s problems may be set to linger if the players do not start showing more passion.
