Anthony Gordon turns off replies as Everton fans greet goodbye message with fury
Anthony Gordon sent a heartfelt farewell message to Everton after completing his move to Newcastle – but turned off the replies to his tweet.
The 21-year-old winger was unveiled by the Magpies on Sunday afternoon after a £45million transfer. It followed a distasteful end to the former Everton academy star’s time at Goodison Park, having skipped training for three days to force through a move while his side remained in the relegation zone.
Everton waved him off with a blunt announcement just weeks after the player was confronted by Toffees fans in the streets after a defeat, where they blocked his car and hurled abuse at him.

Gordon nevertheless took the opportunity to address the fans as he left, posting an emotional video of his time with the Blues. But the youngster made sure to turn off the comments due to the barrage of insults from former fans which have followed him in recent weeks.
Yet they were still able to quote-tweet the original post and let Gordon know exactly their thoughts. “Refusing to train and leaving your boyhood club while they’re in the s*** mid season, then posting this,” one Twitter user wrote:
Another Everton fan tweeted: “He thinks he’s Wayne Rooney.. The fact he had to turn the comments off tells you everything you need to know about this video. Why does he think #EFC fans would want to see this?”
A third commented: “I hope your career flatlines just like [Jack] Rodwell and [Ross] Barkley’s!” And a fourth added: “You forced a move mid-season knowing well you're a key player in your relegation-threatened team. Don't make it seem emotional please.”
Gordon had said in his lengthy message: “To Everton… I came to this club at the age of 11 and not only did it give me a place to play football but it gave me a second family.
"The club has shaped me into the footballer and more importantly the person I am today, it has given me everything I could have asked for and more.

“Like any young scouser living two minutes from the stadium, I dreamt of scoring inside Goodison, in front of thousands with the fans cheering my name. I remember travelling to away games with my mates, singing the players’ songs and dreaming it would happen to me.
"Last year felt so surreal because all my childhood dreams were becoming reality. I wish I could relive some of them days but I’ll settle for the memories, which will last a lifetime for me.
“To the fans, you gave me some of the best nights of my life. You made me a better player. I have always thrived off your energy and you always made me run harder and faster.”
He added: “There has been some difficult moments this year but I never took any of it personally; stick by the team because they need you."
