Former Manchester United forward Angel Gomes has been handed his first England Under-21s call up, but there is no room for Callum Hudson-Odoi in Lee Carsley’s squad for upcoming qualifiers against Slovenia and Andorra later this month.
In August, the Chelsea midfielder turned down the chance of being part of Carsley’s first England Under-21 squad preferring instead to focus on his development at Chelsea.
‘He is not happy with his situation but he never ever brings his frustration to work.’ the England Under-21 manager said at the time.
Callum Hudson-Odoi is considering switching international allegiances to Ghana
The 21-year-old turned down the chance of joining the England Under-21 squad in August
‘Callum is a player that we really like. I’ve had some really good conversations with him and his advisor. Callum felt that it wasn’t the right time for him at the minute to come with England.’
Last month, meanwhile, it emerged Hudson-Odoi was considering switching his allegiances to Ghana with England manager Gareth Southgate growing resigned to the 21-year-old making himself unavailable for selection for the Three Lions.
Hudson-Odoi has dual nationality and FIFA rules would allow him to play senior international football for Ghana because he has not represented England at the finals of a major tournament, and all of his three competitive senior appearances came before the age of 21.

Gomes, meanwhile, could make his debut for the Young Lions next week after receiving his first call-up.
The 21-year-old, who left Old Trafford last year and joined Lille, links up with the squad for their Euro 2023 qualifiers in Slovenia and Andorra this month.
Gomes won the World Cup with England Under-17s in 2017 and made 10 appearances, without scoring, for United.
He moved to Lille in 2020 and spent last season on loan at Boavista, scoring six goals in 30 games to help them finish 12th in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

The Young Lions beat Kosovo 2-0 in Carsley’s first game in charge last month to open their Euro 2023 qualifying campaign.
It came after they were forced to cancel a friendly in Romania after two positive coronavirus cases among the squad and coaching staff.
They face Slovenia in Group G in Celje on October 7 before going to Andorra on October 11.
