Andros Townsend has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo was not particularly welcoming after swapping shirts with the Everton star last season. Then-Manchester United striker Ronaldo handed Townsend his shirt moments after the winger had copied his famous ‘siu’ celebration.

Townsend had made a beeline for Ronaldo immediately after the iconic forward entered the pitch as a substitute in United’s 1-1 draw with Everton in October last year. The 31-year-old wanted the Real Madrid icon’s shirt.

Ronaldo obliged after the game, but Townsend jokingly revealed that he was not very accommodating. That is because Townsend had put Everton ahead and celebrated by copying Ronaldo’s iconic celebration.

“Ronaldo last year at Old Trafford, he came on as a sub and honestly I couldn’t focus on the game until I asked him for his shirt,” Townsend said while commentating for ITV.

“During the game, I was waiting at a corner, bizarrely I was marking him and said, ‘Can I have your shirt after?’ After that got out of my head I could focus on the game, and thankfully ended up scoring.”

Asked by fellow commentator Seb Hutchinson what Ronaldo said, Townsend continued: “He said ‘Yeah’, and then after I scored I done the Siu. I managed to get it but I don’t think he was as accommodating. Butchered it as well, both of us.”

It comes after Ronaldo seemed furious over Ghana attacker Osman Bukari celebrating with the ‘Siu’ having scored against Portugal at the World Cup. The 23-year-old performed the move despite his side trailing 3-2.

Ronaldo could be seen furiously waving his arms in the direction of the Ghana players as they returned to the positions following the goal. The 37-year-old had scored a penalty in Portugal’s victory.

The Portugal captain is sensationally without a club having had his Man Utd contract ripped up last week. Ronaldo conducted a fiery interview with Piers Morgan in which he slated the Red Devils, their boss Erik Ten Hag and owners the Glazer Family.

United released a short statement on their website. It read: “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”

Ronaldo is back in action for Portugal against Uruguay on Monday. He has been linked with a huge-money move to Saudi Arabia.
