Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their goalkeeper pursuit in this summer’s transfer window. Ajax shot-stopper Andre Onana would reportedly prefer a move to Lyon than the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his goalkeeper department this summer after the expiration of Mat Ryan’s loan deal.

Bernd Leno’s future is also up in the air amid speculation linking him with a move away from north London.

The position is one of a number of key areas Arteta and technical director Edu are looking to strengthen this summer after a disastrous 2020/21 campaign.

But the Gunners could miss out on Onana, who is said to be the main goalkeeper target this summer.

Onana is suspended from playing until November because of a doping violation, but is still attracting interest at the Emirates.

However, Ligue 1 side Lyon have reportedly edged ahead in the race to sign the Cameroon international.

L’Equipe claim that Onana is keen to have assurances over game time, which he may not get from Arteta while Leno remains at the club.

Lyon can also offer the 25-year-old European football after qualifying for the Europa League last term, which Arsenal are unable to.

Arteta may have to be ruthless in jettisoning Leno if he is to secure the services of Onana.

Alternatively, the Spanish boss could look elsewhere and Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale has been frequently mentioned as a possible target.

Ramsdale, who has spent the summer on duty with England at Euro 2020, was relegated with the Blades and looks certain to seal a move back to the Premier League.

Though there are doubts over his suitability as a number one at a club with the status of Arsenal.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have announced their first summer signing in Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares.

The talented 21-year-old is likely to provide back-up for Kieran Tierney next season, and boasts experience at U18-U21 level for his native Portugal.

Boss Arteta is excited to see what Tavares can bring to his side in the future.

“We welcome Nuno to the club,” Arteta said.

“He is a young player with great promise who has developed very well with Benfica in recent seasons and has also shown his quality by being part of Portugal Under-21s.

“Nuno’s arrival will give the squad extra strength and options in defence, particularly with this energy on the left side of the pitch.

“We look forward to Nuno’s arrival soon, his integration into the Arsenal family and playing in front of our fantastic supporters.”
