Andre Onana one of six Man Utd stars dug out as supporters make feelings clear

Ten Hag says 'Man Utd in heart' of matchwinner McTominay

Six Manchester United stars should have walked off ‘in shame’ after being saved by Scott McTominay’s heroic brace against Brentford, Gabby Agbonlahor believes. The former Aston Villa striker has called out Casemiro, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Sofyan Amrabat and Andre Onana after the Red Devils underwhelmed at Old Trafford once again.

Late substitute McTominay struck twice in injury time to salvage a victory after Brentford had led since early in the first half. Onana’s costly error allowed Mathias Jensen to score, with Erik ten Hag’s side booed off at half-time.

But there was little credit for a below-par United side after their comeback. Another dismal performance saw them staring in the face of three consecutive defeats at home under Ten Hag.

Agbonlahor brutally called out six United starters who failed to live up to expectations against the Bees. He pointed out that Casemiro, Mount and Rashford were all taken off early with their team needing a goal.

“We were watching the game and we watched it with all of the staff in the studios and Manchester United looked absolutely useless,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“They were booed off at half time, Casemiro was dragged off for another poor performance, [Mason] Mount off at 62 minutes, [Marcus] Rashford off at 62 minutes, not good enough. [Bruno] Fernandes, Rashford, Mount, Casemiro, Amrabat and Onana all should have been walking off that pitch with their heads down in shame, not doing a lap of honour.

“They did a lap of honour like they’d won the Champions League at Old Trafford, a lap of honour! They should be apologising to the fans because the fans aren’t stupid.

“They know that the result is papering over the cracks because they were awful today and they got away with one thanks to horrendous goalkeeping.”

United have endured a poor start to the Premier League season. Victory over Brentford came after defeats by Crystal Palace and Galatasaray in the Premier League and Champions League, respectively.

The Red Devils remain only 10th in the top-flight and Ten Hag insists there is no point getting excited about McTominay’s late double if it is not a ‘turning point’ in the club’s season. “You are relieved in that moment when once again a game that was turning the wrong way for us, we found a turning point,” Ten Hag said.

“It showed the big character in this team, the resilience, and that we have a plan to keep going and you have to make your own luck. We kept patient and carried on.

“I’m really proud of this team, they kept going the whole game. The belief was there. This has to be a turning point but also it has to be a restart because we have to get into higher levels.”
