Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera described Jose Mourinho as a “s***house” and “one of the greatest managers of all time”.

The Spaniard played under Mourinho for two and a half seasons, before the Portuguese coach was sacked and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December 2018. Herrera emerged as a key player for Mourinho, who adapted his position and turned him into a more defensive midfielder.

Herrera played a key role in Mourinho’s short time at Old Trafford which saw United win the League Cup and the Europa League. And the now Athletic Bilbao midfielder offered a glowing review of his time with the former Chelsea manager.

"Very different managers,” Herrera told the Utd Podcast when asked to talk about the managers he played under. “Van Gaal I can say, positional game coach, like a teacher sometimes for young players. Mourinho, a ****house coach.

“It doesn't matter what you have to do to win, I just want to win, and we won. And Ole, a legend of the club.

"He believed so much in Sir Alex Ferguson’s philosophy and he wanted to bring that philosophy back to the club, but it was not easy. The players were different, the moment was different, football was different."

Herrera will not be the first player to have these sentiments about Mourinho and he certainly will not be the last. Despite a strong start to life at Old Trafford, Mourinho’s time with the club ended with high profile fallings out with players such as Paul Pogba.

He was eventually relieved off his services after a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool which left them floundering in sixth position in the Premier League. But despite the ugly way Mourinho and United parted ways, Herrera only had good things to say.

"He is one of the greatest managers of all time. One of the most successful managers of all time. He discovered a new position for me, he made me a more defensive midfielder.

"In the first season we won three trophies: the Community Shield, the Europa League and League Cup. We qualified for the Champions League so it was a very successful season."
