Scotland are yet to score or win at Euro 2020 but Ally McCoist is getting ‘carried away more than he ever has’ with the national team.

A 0-0 draw at Wembley Stadium against England saw Steve Clarke’s ‘fearless’ side win plenty of plaudits and McCoist, himself a former Scotland international, is chief among them.

That point, despite the opening group loss to Czech Republic, has set up a winner-takes-all clash at Hampden Park against Croatia and McCoist is brimming with excitement at the prospect of progress.

‘I genuinely think we can do it,’ McCoist wrote in his Telegraph column. ‘I look at our players and and can’t help but get carried away more than I ever have as a supporter.

‘I’m so looking forward to Tuesday without a bloody clue what’s going to happen but knowing it will be full of drama.

‘Would I rather be a Brazilian fan or a Scottish fan? All day long I’d rather be a Scottish fan. A Brazilian fan knows there will be great football and you probably will get to semi-finals but supporting us, you don’t don’t have a Scooby-Doo from the first minute to the last. And I wouldn’t change it for the world.’

The onus is on players like Che Adams to break Scotland’s barren Euros run in front of goal

What McCoist can accept is that Scotland have to do something against Croatia they have so far failed to do in two group games – score a goal.

The onus will be on Che Adams and Lyndon Dykes to provide the firepower in Glasgow on Tuesday to seal a spot in the knockout stages and McCoist said that in a ‘bizarre’ way it would have helped if the match was away from home, ridding Clarke’s players of mounting expectations.

McCoist was part of the last Scotland squad to compete at a major tournament, only to fail to reach the knockout stage.

That side in ’96 finished third, losing out to second-placed Holland on a goals scored rule but the current format allows for the prospect of three teams from a single group progressing to the last-16.

At Euro 96 Scotland only scored once in their three games, beating Switzerland 1-0 in the final game at Villa Park.

Both McCoist and Clarke now as good a result and performance as it was against England, Scotland need to end their barren run in front of goal to make it all count.

‘Croatia have good attributes, different attributes to England. They are a good team who move the ball well,’ Clarke said over the weekend.

‘We will have to defend well again and find a way to play through midfield.

‘They have two really top players in midfield in Kovacic and Modric and we need to deal with that.

‘If we get everybody on the pitch that we want to get on the pitch and they all produce eight out of 10 performances, then you would hope that would be good enough to get us the win that we need to get out of the group stages.’
