Ally McCoist backs Ange Postecoglou to get Tottenham firing
Ally McCoist backs Ange Postecoglou to get Tottenham firing… but explains the one thing the Australian needs to be a hit in north London

- The Australian has been tasked with galvanizing the beleaguered club
- McCoist says Postecoglou needs the tools to be a success in North London
Ally McCoist is convinced Ange Postecoglou will hit the ground running and prove his doubters wrong – starting with this weekend’s season opener at Brentford.
When it became clear the Australian was going to land the job in north London some disgruntled Tottenham fans started a social media campaign under the #NOTOPOSTECOGLOU hashtag, adamant he was the wrong appointment by chairman Daniel Levy.
But McCoist knows good and well from covering Scottish football just how successful a team the 57-year-old can build, provided he has the backing to do so.
‘I think the most important thing from Postecoglou’s point of view and Spurs’ point of view is, can he be given the tools he wants to work with?’ TNT Sports pundit and co-commentator McCoist said.
‘Look, Spurs have had some unbelievable managers in the last 15-20 years. Some of the managers they’ve had are as good as anywhere around, but for whatever reason it hasn’t really clicked.

But he says the Australian needs to be given the tools to succeed in north London
‘Postecoglou, I’ve got to say, set up a Celtic team that were particularly good to watch if you were a Celtic fan… particularly horrible to play against if you’re a Rangers man! I genuinely hope and think given the tools he’ll do really, really well.’
Postecoglou walked into Celtic on the back of Rangers winning the league and he turned them around to leave this summer on the back of a Treble-winning campaign.
‘He doesn’t get flustered when things go poorly and he doesn’t go overboard when things are going really, really well,’ McCoist added.
‘He’s pretty middle of the ground and I think you can talk to him, you can relate to him. I like him. I hope he does well. Time will tell right enough, and you can argue it’s certainly not going to get any easier, far from it.
‘You look at the signings rivals have made: United want to push on, City will want to stay where they are, Chelsea can’t be as bad again, Arsenal will want to kick on and re-establish themselves, we’re looking forward to seeing Brighton again next year.
Fans have been entertained by Tottenham’s attacking brand of football under Postecoglou
‘So you can argue it’s as tough a time… it’s a great job for him but it will be great to see how it develops.’
Ange-Ball is a style McCoist believes will suit new £45million signing James Maddison, but when asked to draw a collective comparison for the football Spurs fans can expect he goes from north to east London for his answer.
‘Maybe West Ham? Boys like [Alan] Devonshire and [Trevor] Brooking, even [Paolo] Di Canio. They always entertained.
‘Ange will have talented players and a team that he will encourage to express themselves, he really will.’
Tottenham face a trip to Brentford for Postecoglou’s first Premier League game before hosting Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United on August 19.
