Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he ‘wanted to kill’ Graham Potter when the coach began experimenting with him in an unfamiliar position.

The 23-year-old arrived in Brighton as more of an advanced player but has since transitioned to a deeper-lying midfielder.

Speaking to SunSport, Mac Allister admits he found adapting to his new position difficult at first.

The Argentinian said: ‘The first year wasn’t easy for me. I found it very hard coming from Argentina with a different language and different way to play football. I physically wasn’t as strong as I am today.’

Mac Allister then admitted: ‘I wanted to kill him… but that’s part of football. He was very helpful — improving my versatility and physicality. I’m a much better player today because of it so I can thank him a lot.’

The midfielder has become an extremely influential part of Brighton’s team and has excelled in his new position.

Mac Allister has started in every Premier League game for his side so far this season and has even managed to score four goals along the way – including an incredible free-kick against Leicester.

The diminutive midfielder went on to say that he does not mind where he plays, as long as he can help his team win games.

‘I like to play as a No 10, I like to play as a No 6. The most important thing for me is to help my team-mates, win football games and try to be as central as I can so I can be as close to the ball to get on it as much as possible.’

Although Potter left Brighton for Chelsea, Mac Allister does not hold it against his former boss.

‘He’s in a big club now and you can see they’re already playing the way he wants and winning games. I’m happy for them and of course I wish him the best.’

Brighton take on Chelsea at the American Express Community Stadium as Potter returns to his former club for the first time.

Potter is now in charge of Chelsea and has enjoyed a good start to his spell at Stamford Bridge
