Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jack Grealish have been forced to withdraw from the England squad after suffering injury blows.

Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold, 24, underwent medical tests on Monday morning after the stand-in captain limped off during Sunday’s match with Aston Villa at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold felt his hamstring muscle and was substituted, with him visibly in pain as he left the pitch in the second half.

Manchester City forward Grealish, 27, missed their 5-1 win over Fulham on Saturday with a slight thigh injury and has subsequently pulled out of England duty too.

Though it is unclear how serious Alexander-Arnold’s injury is at this stage, it was decided between club doctors and England that it was wise for him to withdraw from the upcoming fixtures against Ukraine and Scotland.

Jurgen Klopp said after the win over Villa and good performance: ‘It would have been cool if Trent hadn’t had felt his hamstring. We will know more after a scan. Let’s hope it’s not serious.’

Alexander-Arnold had been picked as a midfielder in Gareth Southgate’s squad and was said to be under consideration to play in central areas during the fixture against Ukraine.

Winger Grealish didn’t play against Fulham after suffering a ‘slight thigh injury’ but isn’t expected to be sidelined for too long.

England play their latest Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine in the Polish city of Wroclaw on Saturday before taking on Auld Enemy Scotland in a friendly at Hampden Park next Tuesday.

A statement by the England camp read: ‘Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been ruled out of England’s September fixtures.

‘The pair reported to St. George’s Park on Monday but have since withdrawn from the Three Lions squad following checks on injuries sustained prior to camp.

‘All other players are due as planned apart from Kieran Trippier who will arrive on Wednesday owing to a personal commitment.

‘There are no further call ups planned.’
