Aleksandar Mitrovic has joked he is Ivan Toney’s ‘idol’ after the Brentford striker mimicked his celebration after scoring against the Serbian’s Fulham.

Mitrovic previously played with English striker Toney at Newcastle United, but their paths crossed on opposing sides of the west London derby.

After pulling the Bees back to 2-2 with 20 minutes to go, by dispatching a low ball past Bernd Leno, the 26-year-old Toney copied the Serbian’s trademark “twirl of the fingers round the ear” celebration.

However, the 27-year-old Mitrovic had the last laugh, making home advantage count with a 90th minute winner from a header – his third goal of the season so far.

Speaking after the game, Mitrovic admitted he was honoured to be recognised by his former colleague, noting a chain of adoration from Magpies legend Alan Shearer through him to Toney.

‘Everybody has idols. He used to play with me at Newcastle and he was my boy,’ he said to the Fulham website. ‘My idol was Shearer and I am probably his idol.’

Mitrovic was pleased to head home the winner, and praised the atmosphere at Craven Cottage

Mitrovic also hailed the atmosphere, as Marco Silva’s side got their first win of the season in a rollercoaster of a match where they finally edged out their London rivals.

‘It was a proper derby, everyone enjoyed it – the fans, us on the pitch,’ the Serbian said. ‘I think our Manager didn’t enjoy it that much, but at the end I’m sure he was happy!’

Mitrovic’s match-winner followed his two goals in Fulham’s opening match of the Premier League season, a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage against Champions League runners-up Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Toney’s Brentford have four points from their opening three games, with the striker also appearing on the scoresheet in the Bees’ 2-2 draw with embattled Leicester City on matchday one.
