Toby Alderweireld has joked that he’d be happy for Roberto Martinez to stay as his manager next season – but doesn’t mind if it’s with Spurs or Belgium.

Alderweireld was asked ahead of Belgium’s Euro 2021 warm-up against Croatia on Sunday about the prospects of his international boss taking over at his club with Martinez among the favourites to succeed Jose Mourinho.

‘I can only say great things about him. The worst scenario would be that he doesn’t go to Tottenham or be at the national team. I just want him to be one of the two,’ said 32-year-old Alderweireld.

‘I don’t know what the situation is. We have one goal right now, to win the Euros. Apart from that everything is on hold in terms of transfers, coaches.

‘I don’t have any influence on that anyway so I am glad he is here.’

Spurs have pulled out of negotiations with Antonio Conte leaving Martinez, former boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag as the front-runners.

Martinez has previously managed Wigan and Everton in the Premier League and took Belgium to the World Cup semi-final three years ago.

Spurs sacked Mourinho in April with interim Ryan Mason then guiding the team to the end of the season.
