Alan Shearer’s Chelsea transfer demand is dig at summer signing Timo Werner

Alan Shearer took a swipe at Chelsea striker Timo Werner while making a transfer demand to the Blues about their title credentials.

Thomas Tuchel's side moved to within one point of fourth placed Liverpool with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Sunday thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Jorginho.

Chelsea are now well set to go on and push for a place in the Champions League qualification spots, and have a very outside chance at the ultimate prize.

However, Premier League all-time top scorer Shearer admits that while Tuchel has done a brilliant job so far, the Blues are still lacking a world class striker.

“He’s [Tuchel] given everyone an opportunity,” Shearer said on Match of the Day 2.

“He didn’t play [Mason] Mount in the first game, he’s swapped it over with [Ben] Chilwell and [Marcos] Alonso, [Olivier] Giroud has been in there, he’s changed the system slightly. He’s given everyone the opportunity to impress him.

“I still think they are lacking that top-quality centre-forward to challenge [for the title].

“They’ll challenge for fourth but I think to go to the next level they’ll need a top centre forward.”

Chelsea signed Werner from RB Leipzig last summer for £47m, but he has scored just four league goals this season, attracting swathes of criticism.

Tuchel defended the German after the win over the Blades though, insisting he is improving daily, and backing him to find a run of form soon after setting up Mount for their first goal.

“It was a brilliant run to assist the first goal,” Tuchel said of Werner.

“It was a good decision to go around the goalkeeper for the second one. It was a foul and he got us the decisive penalty again.

“I could feel that situation at Tottenham gave him a boost. I could feel him stronger and stronger every day. Today I could really feel him on the pitch.

“He was in the game mentally and physically. And he was decisive, that’s the most important thing.

“If he continues like this the goals will come, I am sure.”
