Alan Shearer has praised Michael Carrick following the end of his brief stint as Manchester United’s temporary manager – and appeared to take a swipe at Roy Keane’s previous comments on Carrick in the process.
Carrick announced after Thursday night’s enthralling 3-2 win over Arsenal that he’d be leaving the club following Ralf Rangnick’s appointment earlier this week.
Carrick was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant but he remained at the club following the Norwegian’s dismissal last month; despite Keane and some others insisting that Solskjaer’s staff should also be dismissed.
But Shearer had plenty of praise for Carrick and his classy message after the match – and he also took a subtle swipe at Keane’s comments from the weekend insisting that Carrick was just as responsible as Solskjaer for United’s alarming form.

“Fair play to him because there will be people who have said he was part of Ole’s coaching staff,” Shearer told Amazon Prime following the announcement on Carrick’s departure.
“But being an assistant you can only give your opinion on ‘no I think we should play five at the back’ the manager says ‘no I want to play four at the back’
“That’s fine but you then have to back your manager up and say okay keep it in house not let the players know in terms of him giving an opinion.
“Then he has to back the manager up in everything he says and does. He might not have agreed with what Ole was doing but he has to back him up.
“So he might think Ole has had to take a lot of the flack, fairly, unfairly and he might think it’s right to walk away.

“But what a fantastic job and what a great guy he is. In the three games he’s had he’s set the team up perfectly and they responded in a very good way.”
Carrick guided United to two wins and a credible draw at Chelsea during his brief three-game stint at the helm.
His unexpected departure comes just days after the former Tottenham ace was blasted by Keane for insisting he was proud of United’s players following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Chelsea; comments which left Keane seething.
He’s talking about the players efforts he’s proud of them,” raged the Irishman on Sunday evening.
“He’s been working with the players for months. He was in the dugout with Ole. All of sudden he’s proud of them and they have a plan.

“What about the other games? We’ve seen all the stats they’ve been the worst in the league in closing people down. Praising players for doing their jobs…
“He was sitting in the dugout with Ole and [former manager Jose] Mourinho as well. All of a sudden he’s proud of the players this week.
“I think the game has changed, every situation is different and I wouldn’t be one for getting rid of all the staff but they have to be accountable.”
