Alan Shearer slams two 'embarrassing' Man Utd flops after Burnley draw
Alan Shearer has branded Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay ’embarrassing’ for their part in Burnley’s equaliser during their 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Tuesday evening.
After Raphael Varane’s early goal was ruled out for offside, Paul Pogba gave United an early lead at Turf Moor.
But Burnley pulled themselves level early in the second half when £12 million January signing Wout Weghorst outmaneuvered both Maguire and McTominay to set up Jay Rodriguez, who finished past David De Gea from close range.
Maguire’s display was criticised by Rio Ferdinand after the game, with the former United defender claiming that the performance will be one he would want to ‘erase’.
Shearer, meanwhile, has slammed both Maguire and McTominay for failing to stop Weghorst in the build up to Burnley’s goal.
‘From Manchester United’s point of view, I mean Maguire and McTominay? The lack of effort and the lack of a tackle from Maguire and McTominay was embarrassing in that midfield,’ Shearer told Premier League Productions.
‘It was far too easy and that’s how Burnley scored.’
Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel added: ‘You can read whatever you want into statistics but when you concede 31 goals that Man United have, you’re not a top-four team then.
‘Newcastle who just got out of the bottom have conceded the most goals with 44. It’s not that far off. They’ve conceded 13 more and they are at the bottom.
‘You cannot conceded that many goals it’s simple as that. You have to keep it tight at the back and then if it’s a 1-0 you have to have the ability to bring that 1-0 victory home if you want to consider yourself top four.’
