Ajax manager makes savage dig about Man Utd when asked about Antony transfer

Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder delivered a savage put down to Manchester United as he discussed the future of Red Devils transfer target Antony.

The 22-year-old winger has been on United's radar all summer, with Erik ten Hag seemingly keen to bring one of his former stars to Old Trafford. It was reported last week that the 13-time Premier League champions had a bid of around £67million rejected by Ajax for the Brazilian, who are understood to be holding out for an eye-watering £84million.

Ten Hag wants to work with Antony after they teamed up so successfully last season. But Ajax manager Schreuder isn't quite so keen on losing the former Sao Paulo man and delivered a blow to United's transfer hopes with a savage interview after their success over Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.

"I want Antony to stay," he began. "I am assuming that the club will not sell him. The money that is being thrown around these days is crazy. But I would not find it okay if we sell another player. We are in a powerful position, financially.

"I understand Antony. But you play for Ajax. We are playing Champions League football. I don't think Man Utd are playing Champions League football."

Antony reportedly refused to train last week amid United's interest. The winger scored 22 goals in all competition under Ten Hag last season and has spoken highly of the influence the current United boss has had on his career.

"Erik has been super important to me," Antony said. "I am grateful to him and wish him all the best. I will always cheer for Erik after working so closely together.

"I have not been able to celebrate or cheer for him as he got no points yet. I couldn't until now anyway and that makes me sad. But knowing Erik, I am convinced that he will turn the tide soon.

"Manchester United will improve at his hand. At his previous clubs he has proven that his method works."
