An Ajax supporter is reportedly receiving treatment in hospital after being stabbed in Naples on Monday night. The fan is expected to make a recovery in time to attend the match between the Amsterdam side and Napoli in the Champions League.

According to AT5, a fan of the Eredivisie outfit was stabbed shortly after he arrived in the Italian city, ‘just in front’ of the hotel that he is staying in ahead of the European clash. The victim was taken to a local hospital but should be able to still attend the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Wednesday evening.

Approximately 2200 Ajax fans are expected to attend the clash, though many have been warned that they may not receive a warm welcome from locals. The report does not state whether the fan who was attacked was wearing club colours.

Last month, Liverpool supporters were given a lot of guidance and advice about how to conduct themselves in Naples, with many anticipating guidance outside the ground. The Reds were beaten 4-1 on the night, with several stars coming under fire for their performance.

Speaking ahead of the match, Liverpool managing director Andy Hughes acknowledged that the away day would be ‘daunting’ for supporters, before saying: “I do understand that some fans will want to make an occasion out of this trip. However, in this case, I’d urge supporters not to wander into the city on their own, or to be wearing club colours during their stay in Naples.”

Jurgen Klopp was also quizzed about how he felt about the warnings that the club sent out to supporters ahead of the game, though he was not willing to entertain any conversation of the sort. He snapped: “You want to create headlines. I really don’t understand it. Are you from Napoli? Do you think it’s a dangerous city? I don’t know. I don’t live a normal life in Napoli. I am protected here, go to the hotel and now you ask me what I think about Napoli.

“You know exactly what people are talking about. If some supporters meet some supporters, something can happen. Nothing to do with the city, so I don’t know. But I am not here to create headlines for you.”

It remains to be seen whether police in Naples are able to avoid Ajax and Napoli clashing on Wednesday night ahead of their match. Elsewhere in Group A, Liverpool will travel to Rangers.
