Gabriel Agbonlahor has accused Gareth Bale of playing ‘walking football’ in Wales’ defeat to England at the World Cup.
Bale only lasted 45 minutes before being withdrawn with a hamstring injury and wasn’t able to make any impact, with Wales ultimately losing 3-0 and being eliminated from the tournament.
Agbonlahor claimed that Bale was ‘very selfish’ to start the game when he clearly wasn’t fit.
Gabriel Agbonlahor has slammed Gareth Bale for ‘playing walking football’ against England
Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor said: ‘Before the tournament started I made a statement that the Welsh fans were upset with. I said no Welsh players gets in England’s best 30 players, and I’ve been proven right haven’t I this tournament.
‘Bale against England was not fit. I thought he was very selfish. If I was Rob Page, I know he’s Mr. Wales, Gareth Bale, but you must see him in training, he’s not fit enough to play.’
Agbonlahor believes Bale was ‘selfish’ to start against England as he was clearly unfit
Agbonlahor added that another player, such as Brennan Johnson, could have started instead of Bale.
He said: ‘He started the game against England and he was playing walking football the first half and then came off at half time injured. For me that’s selfish when you could have played (Brennan) Johnson, you could have played other players who would have been 100 per cent fit and added something.’
Bale played just 45 minutes against England and made little impact as Wales were eliminated
Bale is undoubtedly a legendary figure for Wales – he has 111 caps for his country and has scored 41 goals – both of which are records.
He also made a contribution at this tournament, winning and scoring a penalty in the 1-1 draw against USA.
However, he was unable to make any sort of impact against England and, at the age of 33, there are suggestions that his powers are on the wane.
Bale reportedly has a clause in his contract at Los Angeles FC which would allow him to leave the club before the start of the new MLS season in February.
There have been suggestions that Bale could leave LAFC after the World Cup, but the club expect him to honour his contract, which runs until the end of June next year.
