An A-League player has provided a contender for miss of the season after spurning a glorious opportunity for Wellington Phoenix against Adelaide United on Friday.
The Phoenix, who sought to close the gap on second-placed United ahead of their contest at Hindmarsh Stadium, fell to a two-goal deficit heading into the half time interval when Kosta Barbarouses was presented with a great chance.
The 33-year-old striker pressed well to win possession from United goalkeeper Joe Anthony Gauci close to the byline, and immediately turned his attention to goal.
From a tight angle, all Barbarouses had to do was slot the ball into the empty net as defenders harried back while teammate David Ball presented himself for a square pass.
Caught in two minds, Barbarouses opted to poke the ball towards goal but got his effort all wrong, skewing it off the far post and United survived the threat.
The hosts made their rivals pay for that major error, adding three more goals to their total as they secured a dominant 5-1 win.
More to follow.
