Sky Sports presenter Adam Smith is a surprise frontrunner to replace Jeff Stelling on Soccer Saturday, according to reports.
Last week it was announced that experienced TV host Stelling will step down from his trademark role at the end of the season after more than 25 years with the broadcaster.
The Hartlepool fan was hailed as a ‘consummate professional’ by Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker after a long stint.
But Stelling will need to be replaced – and according to the Sun, Smith is the shock favourite to take over from the 68-year-old.
He is believed to have interviewed for the job last year alongside Sky’s Julian Warren, who has stepped in when Stelling has been unavailable, and Mark Chapman.

And a source told the Sun that ‘Smithy’, who hosts The Saturday Social, impressed with a stellar screen test which ‘went down a storm’ with the Sky hierarchy.
The source said: ‘Smithy is the frontrunner to take on Jeff’s role. There are a lot of people behind the scenes who are batting for him to get the job.
‘Soccer Saturday is a tough gig and it needs a solid broadcaster who is quick on their feet. Stepping into Jeff’s shoes is a massive responsibility but plenty of his colleagues think Smithy is the right person for the job.’
A different source added: ‘No decisions have been made yet on Soccer Saturday and discussions are ongoing.’
