  • They are set to offer him a new long-term contract to try to convince him to stay

AC Milan are reportedly ready to offer manager Stefano Pioli a new long-term contract after he led the club to their first Scudetto in 11 years last season.

Pioli took over from Marco Giampaolo at the San Siro in October 2019 with the team in the bottom half of the table, but has turned the Rossoneri’s fortunes around in his three years at the helm.

Milan pipped their rivals Inter to the title on the final day of last term, and the club’s hierarchy are now keen to reward Pioli with a multi-year deal, according to Tuttosport via Football Italia.

The 56-year-old’s current contract expires next year, although there is an option to extend this by a further 12 months.

However, Milan want to keep Pioli beyond this period, and are expected to offer him a longer deal.

Pioli, who has spent his entire coaching career in Italy, managing Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio among others, has won 84 of his 149 games in charge of Milan.

The Italian giants won their final six league games in 2021-22 as they held their nerve to claim their first domestic triumph since 2011.

Milan have beaten Juventus this season and look well-placed to challenge for the title again

Milan have also started this season brightly, losing just one of their opening nine league matches to leave them only three points behind leaders Napoli. They have already beaten Inter and Juventus in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Milan still have a chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the Champions League as well.

Despite losing both of their matches to Chelsea, they have picked up four points from their four games, and currently sit just two points behind second-placed Red Bull Salzburg in Group E.

Pioli’s side still have to travel to Dinamo Zagreb later this month, before rounding off the group stages with a potential crunch clash at home to Salzburg in November.
