Roman Abramovich is reportedly unable to bring cleaners into his home on ‘billionaires’ row’ as a result of the sanctions that have hit the Chelsea owner.

The UK government have alleged that Abramovich has ‘close ties’ with Russian president Vladimir Putin and frozen his assets as a result.

Those assets include Chelsea, who the Russian owns, and a £90million mansion on Kensington Palace Gardens near Hyde Park in central London.

Abramovich was one of seven oligarchs to be targeted on Thursday as the government continues to step up its response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, though they do not believe he is in the UK.

The house is one of Abramovich’s more expensive assets, but according to The Mirror, the sanctions means that he will not be able to keep it maintained.

It is stated that no ‘financial transaction’ is allowed to take place with the sanctioned asset, unless a special licence is issued, as is the case for Chelsea.

That means that he is unable to pay a cleaner to come to his house or pay an electricity company to turn on the lights.

Abramovich will even be unable to stay at his house as the sanctions mean that he is banned from entering the UK.

It would be a criminal offence for anyone to circumvent those sanctions, with all of Abramovich’s UK properties frozen.

The Russian is understood to possess a multi-million pound property empire which has now been frozen, though they have not yet been seized by the government.

He is worth an estimated £9.4bn and was slammed on Thursday by UK foreign secretary Liz Truss.

“Today’s sanctions show once again that oligarchs and kleptocrats have no place in our economy or society,” Truss said.

“With their close links to Putin they are complicit in his aggression. The blood of the Ukrainian people is on their hands. They should hang their heads in shame.

“Our support for Ukraine will not waver. We will not stop in this mission to ramp up the pressure on the Putin regime and choke off funds to his brutal war machine.”
