'A different energy' – Danny Murphy praises Man Utd star after West Ham victory
Danny Murphy reserved special praise for Marcus Rashford after his last-gasp winner in Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over West Ham on Saturday.
The 24-year-old, who has faced criticism for his recent displays, came off the bench for United and ended up winning the game for Ralf Rangnick’s side in stoppage time.
Rangnick brought on Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial in the second half as the Red Devils searched for a winner, and all three were involved in the goal.
With the scores level at 0-0 at Old Trafford, Martial played a ball through to Cavani, who provided the cross for Rashford to tap in at the far post.
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Murphy praised the impact of United’s substitutes and highlighted Rashford’s ‘different energy’ on the pitch.
‘Ultimately, the quality United had to bring of the bench was what won them the game, and especially Rashford,’ said the former Liverpool midfielder.
‘We saw a different energy about him today. There’s been a lot of chat about his body language and his intent, or lack of it.
‘That’s exactly what you want, someone bringing on a sharpness, a freshness.
‘He was running in behind, he was running at people. Like the Rashford we’ve seen for the last few seasons, the confident Rashford. The one who causes players problems.
‘Up until the substitutes were made, and especially Rashford, the game was quite level, there wasn’t really much in it.
‘And then of course, Martial come on, he’s had some criticism recently, rightly so.
‘He had a point to prove. He was running about, putting himself about, trying to get on the ball. It gave Manchester United the impetus in the final stages of the game.’
The result has seen United leapfrog West Ham into fourth place in the Premier League table.
