8 stadiums to begin construction from £1billion bowl to Everton’s new ground
From Everton's Bramley-Moore Dock to the new Eco Park plans of Forest Green Rovers – football fans around the world can get ready for some eye-catching new stadiums over the next few years.
With capacities that range from 4,000 all the way to 100,000, the financial constraints placed on sport by the global pandemic haven't scuppered the multi-million pound plans of many billionaire owners.
While designs tend to change as plans get closer to completion, bold new ideas are set to become a reality across the UK, as well as in Italy and even further afield.
Daily Star Sport has picked out eight of the most exciting new stadium plans which have already broken ground, or are imminently expecting construction work to begun…
Guangzhou Evergrande Stadium
The Guangzhou Evergrande Football Stadium is currently under construction in Guangzhou, China.
The new home venue of Guangzhou F.C has a construction cost of 12 billion yuan, which is almost £1.5million, and has a planned opening for December of 2022.
With a seating capacity of 100,000 people, the lotus-shaped design came from the mind of Shanghai-based American architect Hasan Syed.
Grand Stade de Casablanca
The Grand Stade de Casablanca is currently the proposed name of a new football stadium to be built in Casablanca, Morocco, and completed during 2025.
The stadium is set to have a capacity of 93,000 spectators, which will make it the third biggest stadium in Africa – replacing the current Stade Mohamed V in Egypt.
The Morocco national football team are set to become the lead tenants, with the ground playing a huge part in a potential bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
New Sheffield Stadium

Sheffield FC, best known for being the oldest football club in the world, have plans to move into a 4,000-seat stadium.
The club was formed in 1857, and currently play at East Bank stadium in the eighth-tier Northern Premier League Division One South East.
Sheffield FC chairman Richard Tims said: "Welcome to a new era of Sheffield FC, the world’s first football club. We are pleased to announce our vision for the future: a new stadium back in the Steel City, and a new membership scheme where fans from every club and country can show their respect for the heritage of the game."
New Forest Green Rovers stadium
Proud to be the the world’s greenest football club, Forest Green Rovers had their plans for a new stadium approved by Stroud District Council by in December of 2019.
Called the Eco Park, Forest Green's new home has been designed by the architectural practice Zaha Hadid, and is set to have seating for 5,000 fans.
The club website says: "It will have two additional football pitches, including one with an all-weather 4G surface. Around 500 trees and 1.8km of hedgerows will be planted at the site to promote biodiversity."
New Milan Stadium
Back in September, the final design for the new home of AC Milan and Inter Milan was decided upon.
The famous Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, or San Siro, was not said to be modern enough for a new era, with the current facilities not up to scratch for further renovations.
A joint statement reads: "FC Internazionale Milano and AC Milan believe it is essential, especially in light of the current moment, to commence a project that represents more than one billion euros of private investment, which will generate thousands of new jobs and serve as a cornerstone for the future development of the city of Milan and Italian football."
Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium
Back in August, Everton shared the news that work on their new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium had commenced ahead of a planned opening before the 2024/25 season.
The £500m stadium is set to have 52,888 seats, and bring in almost 12,000 construction staff.
Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright said: “This is a momentous day. One that we have all been waiting for.
"To know that Evertonians and the people of this great city are together with us on this journey is a special feeling."
Stadio della Roma
Plans for the Stadio della Roma have been on and off since the initial idea was published back in 2017, with the mayor of Rome initially rejecting the proposal.
Following that, stadium plans were approved, before being halted earlier this year.
The ground would host seating capacity is planned for 52,500 spectators if completed, and connect with the Tiber River as well as the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport.
New Luton Stadium
Luton Town have plans for a new 23,000 seater stadium named Power Court – with an opening target of 2024.
The club signed a Planning Performance Agreement (PPA) with Luton Borough Council back in 2020, with commencement of initial works set to start later this year.
The club have said: "The potential of the site is unmistakable with its ability to deliver approximately 4,000 new jobs and a contribution of some £240m each year to the Luton economy."
