7 stars that Man Utd sold too soon – from PSG winger to Serie A hitman Lukaku

Manchester United have regularly been busy in the transfer window, and criticism has often followed.

And while it’s generally the incomings that have been questioned, sales and departures aren’t immune from anger and frustrations.

Like many clubs, there is a high turnover of players at Old Trafford with not all decisions proving to be right ones.

Plenty of big names have struggled during their time at the Premier League giants before going on to prove their doubters at United wrong.

And Daily Star Sport have looked at seven stars that Manchester United may have let go too soon over the years…

Wilfried Zaha

Zaha is back at Crystal Palace now with United having originally signed him from Selhurst Park back in 2013.

He headed back to the Eagles on loan and never really made an impact during his time at Old Trafford.

Though he is now one of the more exciting wingers in the Premier League with United regularly linked with a move to take him back.

Jaap Stam

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to sell Stam was considered one of the great manager’s biggest mistakes.

The colossal Dutch defender spent three seasons at Old Trafford, helping United to the famous Treble, with his exit coming as a surprise.

He went on to play for AC Milan and Ajax following his move to Lazio with many wishing Stam stayed at United.

  • Angel Di Maria

The Argentine certainly showed glimpses of what he can do during his time at Old Trafford but never seemed to settle in the Premier League.

Di Maria had been one of La Liga's top wingers for Real Madrid before his move to United.

He scored just four times for the Red Devils, though soon departed for PSG where he quickly found his feet again.

Di Maria continues to sparkle in Ligue 1 and helped PSG to the Champions League final last season.

    Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku had been seen as the long-term United No. 9 though is now plying his trade in Serie A with Inter Milan.

Lukaku scored 27 and 15 goals in his two seasons with United, though there were regular reports of discontent.

Now he’s seeming to enjoy his football again with United managing to get all but £1m of the £75m they spent on the Belgian back from Inter.

    Gerard Pique

Pique was brought to United from Barcelona but made just 23 appearances in four seasons before heading back to the Catalan giants.

He has regularly impressed at the Nou Camp while United have struggled with the centre of their defence.

Barca paid just £5m to take him back and the move has seen Pique win plenty of trophies back in Spain.

    Memphis Depay

Brought to Old Trafford by Louis van Gaal, Depay flattered to deceive during his time in the Premier League.

He was 21 when he signed for United though never really gained the trust of Jose Mourinho following Van Gaal’s departure.

United could, and perhaps should, have been patient with Depay who has gone on to star for Lyon.

    Cristiano Ronaldo

It’s perhaps hard to argue that United sold Ronaldo too soon, given the success he had at Old Trafford.

But the Portuguese star’s best years came following his move to Real Madrid, where he won four Champions League titles in five years.

United did not want to sell Ronaldo in 2009, though he wanted to head to the Spanish capital and the money proved too good.

Now at Juventus, there is regular talk that Ronaldo could one day return ‘home’ to the Theatre of Dreams.
