5 Liverpool stars who could follow Real Madrid target Michael Edwards to Spain
Liverpool's sporting director Michael Edwards is set to leave the club next summer after 11 years with the club and five in his current role.
Edwards has been credited with bringing many of the club's current stars to the club during his tenure, with the Premier League and Champions League both won in recent years.
His ability to lure world class talent to the club has caught the eye of other clubs, with Real Madrid reportedly eyeing a move to appoint him as sporting director.
Therefore, here are five players who could follow Edwards to the Santiago Bernabeu if he joined the Spanish giants.
Mohamed Salah
In recent months, reports linking Mohamed Salah with a move to Real Madrid have continued to intensify thanks to the Egyptian's impressive form.
Salah has scored 21 goals and provided nine assists in 22 matches already this season and is arguably the most in-form player in the world right now.
Therefore, Real Madrid's interest coupled with Edwards' Liverpool links could mean a move finally happens next summer.
In addition, Salah has yet to agree a new contract, and with his current deal expiring in 2023, next summer would be the last chance to cash in on him.
Sadio Mane
Another Liverpool winger that has been strongly linked with Real Madrid in the past is Sadio Mane.
Real have reportedly had an interest in the Senegal international since as early as 2018, but have so far failed to lure him away from Anfield.
Mane is one of Liverpool's key men and has featured in every league and Champions League match so fart his season.
However, like Salah, his contract is also up in 2023.
Virgil van Dijk
Following the departure of Sergio Ramos in the summer, it would not be a surprise if Real Madrid attempted to use Edwards to bring Virgil van Dijk to the club.
The Dutch defender has developed into one of the world's best since joining Liverpool in 2018 and fits into the mould of a 'Galactico' signing.
A deal could prove difficult, with Liverpool likely to want to recoup as much of the club record £75million they paid for him.
Add to that the fact he is a key man and still has over three years remaining on his contract, which was only extended in August.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Real Madrid currently lack considerable options on the right-hand side of defence, with Spanish defender Daniel Carvajal their only recognised right-back.
Therefore, Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold could represent the ideal signing for the 13-time European champions.
The 23-year-old England international is arguably the best right-back in the world, but having come through the Liverpool academy is a fan favourite at Anfield.
His contribution of 10 assists already this season will also make it unlikely that the Reds let him leave.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
One player who would most likely only move to Real Madrid if Edwards was installed as sporting director is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The English midfielder has struggled with injuries since arriving at Anfield from Arsenal and competition in midfield is rife at Liverpool.
Still only 28, Oxlade-Chamberlain could be about to reach his prime and would be a younger option to some of Real Madrid's current midfielders.
Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro will all be in their 30s by the end of this season.
