5 Klopp touchline spats including Lampard breaking unwritten rule

Liverpool's next six Premier League fixtures

Jurgen Klopp is no stranger to a bust-up on the touchline as he has seen plenty of explosiveness during his seven years at Liverpool. The German is renowned for his animation on the sidelines as he attempts to spur his team on, but occasionally tempers have flared against some of the biggest clubs and opposition managers have not been afraid to get involved either. He has battled the likes of Frank Lampard and Jose Mourinho while making several accusations against his Premier League counterparts. Here, Express Sport looks at five of the biggest touchline feuds that Klopp has been a part of during his time at Liverpool.

Klopp vs Tony Pulis

Klopp refused to shake hands with Tony Pulis in 2015 during his first few months at Anfield after a Divock Origi 96th-minute goal rescued a point for the hosts as they drew 2-2 with West Brom. A fiery afternoon saw Dejan Lovren stretchered off after he was caught by Craig Gardner, but the referee failed to produce a red card – much to Klopp’s frustration as he could not stop himself from shouting at both the officials and Pulis.

Though Klopp and Pulis could be seen exchanging verbal spars during the game, the German did attempt to play down any rift between the pair after the game. “I didn’t see him after the game. I can say nothing,” Klopp said. “We had some words in the game; sometimes it takes more than a few seconds to cool down.”

Klopp vs Frank Lampard

One of Klopp’s most iconic outbursts came against Lampard after the Chelsea icon took the top job at Stamford Bridge. The Reds were 5-3 victors in July 2020, but Lampard was unhappy that a foul was not given his side’s way.

Lampard was heard telling the Liverpool coaching staff to “f*** off”, and continued to vent after the game, telling Sky Sports: “Fair play to Liverpool Football Club, they’ve won the league, but also don’t get too arrogant with it. That was my point, but it’s done. In match play, you can get emotional and that was it,”

Klopp was not impressed as he accused Lampard of breaking an unwritten rule by extending their argument after the full-time whistle had blown. He said: “You cannot hit me with something like that. We are not arrogant. Frank was in a competitive mood, I respect that. Say what you want in that situation, pure emotion, he came to win.

“But what he has to learn is speaking about that after the game when the whistle has gone is not OK. Final whistle, as a real sportsperson… close the book and he didn’t do that and that is what I don’t like, honestly. I only speak now because he spoke afterwards.”

Klopp vs Mikel Arteta

Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 victory over Mikel Arteta’s Gunners side in 2021, scoring all four goals in the latter stages of the game. Around the hour mark when the game was tense and deadlocked, however, Klopp and Arteta were among many to clash in the dugout following Sadio Mane’s aerial challenge on Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu.

After Klopp and Arteta got heated on the touchline, Klopp apologised for his actions and admitted that he was worthy of his yellow card. “The referee did really well in that situation – I deserved a yellow card,” Klopp said. “It wasn’t OK and that is what I said. It just happened in the moment.”

Klopp vs Jose Mourinho

Mourinho was unimpressed with Klopp’s touchline behaviour after Roberto Firmino scored a late winner against his Tottenham side in December 2020. Liverpool leapfrogged Spurs to the top of the table, as the two bosses could be seen having a heated discussion at full-time which the former Chelsea boss explained after the game.

“I told him [Klopp] the best team lost and he disagreed, but that’s his opinion – if I behave the same way he does on the touchline, I do not stay there,” he told Amazon Prime. “That’s animated? For some reason I am different…”

Klopp vs Sean Dyche

Burnley and Sean Dyche had often been a thorn in the side of many top Premier League sides, proving so once again as a late Ashley Barnes penalty saw the Clarets snatch all three points at Anfield in January 2021.

Klopp was attempting to dash down the tunnel at half time when an incident involving Barnes and Fabinho halted him and he then became enraged at a comment Dyche said and the pair continued to argue towards the dressing rooms.

While both head coaches have a history of alterations, Dyche explained that there was no bad blood between them. “A couple of things were said,” Dyche admitted. “It’s just two managers fighting for their teams, wanting to win the game. You are allowed to say your piece if it is appropriate and I did. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
