$470m deal behind superstar Lionel Messi’s tears

Paris Saint-Germain has formally made a contract offer for Lionel Messi whose Barcelona departure is almost a reality.

Messi fought back tears on Sunday as he confirmed he would be ending his 21-year association with the club — where he signed as a 13-year-old — due to financial constraints.

After purchasing Jack Grealish for a British record transfer fee of £100m (A$189m), and looking to spend even more on Harry Kane, Manchester City has distanced itself from acquiring Messi.

As such, the only club that can realistically afford him is PSG, where Messi said a move and reunification with Neymar is a “possibility”.

Now Sky Sports reports that the Paris giant has tabled an initial two-year deal, thought to be in the region of $47 million-a-year after tax.

The offer reportedly sits with Messi’s representatives who are reviewing the offer carefully before making a decision.

The publication reports that Messi has two other offers but PSG are the favourites to sign him.

Asked if he would be moving to PSG, Messi said: “That is one possibility, to reach those heights.

“I’ve got nothing confirmed with anybody. I had a lot of calls, a lot of interested clubs. At the moment, nothing is closed, but we are talking about a lot of things.”

Manchester City is reportedly willing to offload Bernado Silva in a deal for wantaway Spurs striker Harry Kane.

City has baulked at Tottenham’s massive asking price of £150 million ($300m) — which would smash the British record just days after it was set to sign Grealish.

Instead, Sportmail reports that City is willing to send Silva in the other direction — or go up to £130 million (A$245m) in a money-only deal.

Raheem Sterling has ruled himself out of being part of a deal despite being unsettled in Manchester.

Silva is also said to be unsettled as he sees his chances of game time being diminished since the signing of Grealish.

Kane has returned to Tottenham after a holiday but will miss the season opener, coincidentally against City, as he won’t be able to train with teammates until Friday.
